Triax FM Radio Aerials, High Build Quality.
The short wire aerials that come with VHF FM tuners or hi-fi systems will not give optimum radio reception, and to get the best out of a radio it is better to get an aerial fitted to the outside of the house, the higher the better. In many cases sighting the aerial in the loft will be sufficient.
What type of FM aerial should I buy?
If you live close to an VHF FM transmitter such as a local radio station then an ‘Omni directional’ circular FM aerial will probably be sufficient. This can easily be fitted in the loft with a coaxial cable running to your VHF radio tuner/hi-fi system. N.B. make sure there is a VHF FM radio aerial socket on your system. A piece of wire dangling out the back of the unit with no sign of an aerial socket is of no use. Omni directional VHF FM circular aerials have the advantage of receiving radio signals from all directions.
If you wish to receive FM broadcasts from outside of your region or simply you live in a poor reception area, then we would strongly advise the use of a VHF FM Beam aerial. Again mounted as high as possible. Beam aerials or 'Yagi Aerials' to give them the correct title, are made up of several 'elements'. The more elements there are, the higher the gain of the aerial which will bring in the very weak stations. Please note that Yagi aerials are directional and therefore should be pointed in the direction of the radio transmitter. By their nature these aerials receive the strongest signals from the transmitter they are pointing towards.
